Yes, Ben, There is a God... and His Name is Mark Moss-Gibbs

The formerly sorry, good-for-nothing, over-paid, primadonna, 'Skins are 3-o. They're making up for all their pathetic 4th quarter losses of the past decade. Is Joe Gibbs a genius or just a good luck charm? I don't know. The fact remains that we are still atop the NFC East after a quarter of the season has been played out. The last time this happened we went to the Superbowl. I don't forsee that happening this season, but it finally looks like a distinct possibility before Gibbs' second tenure is over.

Also, 'Skins fans at the bar I was in broke into a chorus of "Hail to the Redskins" after we scored that field goal in OT. It was too weird, yet heartwarming. "Hail to the Redskins/hail victory" indeed.

Bonus for us Maryland grads: Nick Novak -- the greatest kicker of all time, by the way -- hits the winning figgie.
I still think the Redskins are the worst 3-0 team ever. Mind you, that doesn't matter, because going 6-7 down the strech still likely puts us in the playoffs -- provided that we win two of the remaining three against the Giants and Cowboys.

Oh, I dunno. We certainly often look like the worst 3-0 team ever. If you check out that stats though, it doesn't look like Indianapolis is any better than Washington. We're about as far ahead of them on defense as they are ahead of us on offense.

We're finally not killing ourselves with penalties too. That was probably the most discouraging thing last season. We looked like a bunch of amatuers with 12 men on the field half the time and a billion delay of game penalties. I think we're 4th best in the league right now in terms of not making those kinds of idiot mistakes (Indianapolis being one of those teams ahead of us). It seems to be paying off too.

I don't think we'll be sweeping anyone in our division this year and I'm not particularly optimistic that we'll make it to the playoffs, but still... I am impressed with the progress since last season. I'd be perfectly content with an 8-8 season.

All I'm saying is that I'm still not impressed with the offensive scheme. I don't care what they say, Gibbs still has not figured out how to use Clinton Portis. This is a guy that average 5.5 yards per carry in Denver. Now he averages 3.
Plus, the defense is good when it's good, but when it's bad (like that last Seattle drive), it's very bad. If you blitz like mad, you need to get pressure on the QB. They aren't, which is like handing yards to your opponent.
And as for the comparison stat-wise to Indy: The 'Skins aren't Indy. Not even close. You know why? Because even though they won with defense for three games, they still have Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, and Edgerin James.

I will agree that Gibbs' does not know how to use Portis yet. He never should have tried to acquire him to begin with. Portis is does not have the build that Gibbs really wants in a back. However I think our big problem, more than anything else right now, is our offensive line, which is about as leaky as a whiffle ball. Clinton Portis will never average 5.5 yards a game with this line no matter what plays Gibbs calls.

You know, I really do love the classic long counters and traps Gibbs favors. But I'm just not sure that it can work in today's NFL because defenses are so fast. What good is pulling linemen if they get beat to the hole? And this is ignoring the fact that Portis is the type of back you run reads, zone runs, and strech plays for. He shouldn't have to line up a yard further from the line so that the old counter trey or student body right will work.
Also, the D-line is great against the run, but couldn't beat me to the quarterback. And with Lavar's apparent disappearance from the defense, that means we have guys like Chris Clemons and Lamar Marshall blitzing, and they suck at it. The good news is that Marcus Washington might have been the best addition Dan Snyder has ever made. That guy is a monster.
