W.: a D-grade Nazi.

can someone tell me why Bob Barker's retirement from the Price is Right is a homepage news on the washingtonpost.com? and do we really need a photo of a teary-eyed, mylar confetti-dusted Bob? by contrast the nytimes.com has a photo of Putin and an accompanying article about his comparing the US foreign policy (and apparently NATO) to the Third Reich. while i see his point (the use of bigotry and fear to mobilize a nation, imperialism, delusions of grandeur (or even just delusions) by the commander-in-chief, etc.),  it seems somewhat unfitting. the Third Reich was much more competent and effective than our current administration... too bad they had their gooey innards replaced with evil.

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Let's get back to what really matters: Bob Barker!

You're right. I digressed. My apologies. Mr. Barker, you shall rest for eternity in my heart as the man who dispensed money and joy to complete morons and their lazy, mentally defective relatives who watched them on daytime TV, respectively. I shall cherish the memories, like when you licked a goat dressed as Dolly Parton and when you ran over my friend Larry's grandmother in your gold plated hummer, breaking her recently replaced hip and bending ever-so-slightly the steel plate in her head such that she no longer picked up audio from the Home & Garden network, much to the detriment of her azalea plants. Yes, in troubling times like this, only the words of Celine Dion might provide some--even if it's an infinitesimally small--filament of hope. My heart will go on, Bob... where, as I stated before, my memories of you will quietly sleep for eternity.

Oh, and to be fair to the Post, Putin's comments aren't really anything new. As far as I can tell, he said, "They are only transforming, changing their appearance. In these new threats, as during the time of the Third Reich, are the same contempt for human life and the same claims of exceptionality and diktat in the world." This is fairly run-of-the-mill for Putin. He's always decrying the unilaterism of the US's foreign policy. That he limited only to military action is actually kinda weak. Normally he takes jabs at the trade policy, too. Not exactly worth stopping the presses.

well, it's one thing to criticize US foreign policy and trade policy, which is completely fair on the part of Putin. but it's just hypocritical of him to relate the US to a repressive dictatorial regime. people in glass houses...

I don't know. The key to an autocracy is to pick the right leader. Pooling all the power into the hands of one person is inherently dangerous, but in the right hands can be the best course of action. Is it the best course of action in Russia? I dunno. Putin at least opposes the corruption that has plagued his country, and seeks to return them to a prominent position on the world stage. And he hasn't invaded any countries on false pretenses lately, so he's got that on the US.
