photos from meg's garden

this is the crowning achievement of common ground's meg perry healthy soil project. a large portion of it is being turned into a CSA while another section will be a general community garden and a few beds will be overseen by common ground. there's some concern about the original owner paying back-taxes and reclaiming the property. but there's action being taken that will hopefully preserve its place in the community.

Flushy,

Here's maybe an unwelcome comment, but I'm curious (I've been discussing botany topics lately with your sister). If the garden occupies a location where toxins and other contaminants leeched into the soil, how can you be sure that the vegetables have not absorbed them? That would happen in the normal nutrient cycle. Even if the soil was tested, have the plants been tested? Just because the vegetables look really healthy, doesn't mean they are (even with Emiko's vinegrette).

you know, we have lots of equiptment that test these kind of things. mainlu pestiside residue, but as long as the dirt was tested, the veggies can be tested too.

i've been told that the soil has tested clean. i don't know if the plants have been. though, if there aren't contaminants in the soil and we don't spray them on, then there shouldn't be any in the plants.

and i should note that conventionally grown plants are covered in toxins on a regular basis--pesticides and petrochemical fertilizers. how do you know the salad you ate at dinner last night was safe?

i for one, avoid veggies from china. crazy mf pesticides in their soil! some of them anyway and better to go local right!? although i have weakness for american citrus. but then i get more concerned with the preservatives they spray on those things... so thus i try to go with a hippie store that try to minimize such junk for there mere purpose of convenience. hurrays for japan co-op! they rock my world. as for the unknowns.. i leave it up to my body to fight it, get ammuned to it. the mysteries and wonders that are the human body. i mean, if i take poison at small amounts right, they won't kill me hopefully... :)
