second line

it's a tradition here that when an established musician dies the
members of his band lead a parade in his honor and the crowd follows
behind.

Do you know the origin of the phrase "second line?" Is there a tradition of "first line?" What would that be?

I looked this up once on wikipedia, and I think the 'first line' is the people close to the deceased, and the second line are those who may not have known the person, but join in the parade.
